Southern German Deliciousness in Friedrichshain
Schweinekrustenbraten is my favorite dish at this southern German restaurant: It's pork roast with a thick crust of fat, covered in a dark beer sauce that balances out the richness of the pork, soaks into the knödel (bread dumplings crusted with pork fat) and combines perfectly with the caraway seeds in the Bavarian sauerkraut on the side. Bavarian beers on tap here are good, too --especially the ‘clear, light, herbacious’ Oberelchinger Prälät, but if you want to experience how truly glorious a Bavarian microbrew can be, check out Hops & Barley, a few doors west of Spätzle & Knödel, where you can also find some of the best schmaltz in Berlin.
