Søraust-Svalbard Nature Reserve

The Søraust-Svalbard Nature Reserve is made up of Svalbard’s eastern islands of Barentsøya and Edgeøya where birdlife is abundant and Atlantic walrus populations continue to rebound after having been hunted severely for centuries. Nearly half of the much smaller Barentsøya is glacial, while the west coast of Edgeøya is rich in tundra that supports reindeer, arctic fox and other fauna. Old whale-hunting stations and cabins can still be spotted along the coasts of these islands, and today many are protected cultural sites.
