I came to Som's with my great friend, a chef, who suggested it knowing the big foodie I am and how much I enjoy spicy gravies!
Som's is a local "hole in the wall" cash-only thai restaurant. You are served on a table in the street with the cars literally passing next to you. I recommend you come late in the afternoon when the incandescent sun of Manila has retrieved a little so you can enjoy the meal... which will be hot on its own accord.
My friend was absolutely right, I loved the food! We ordered everything family style, the best way to get to enjoy a bit of the enormous amount of culinary wealth enclosed in the menu of this restaurant. To start, the classic Papaya Salad... spicy, crunchy, tangy with a hint of sweetness. Then, we had Green Curry Pork, the well known Chicken Panang and the Seafood Pad Thai. All 3 dishes were very different and offered a great combinations of a taste of Thailand. The Panang was creamy with the red bell peppers, eggplant and basil infused flavors and that delicious taste that only coconut based gravies have. The green chili was spicier and less on the sweet side and the Pad Thai was... a bit of sweetness followed by the nuttiness that mixes with the spice and gets topped by the drops of lemon that were added just seconds before they hit your mouth... just classic. Everything you expect from a well made Pad Thai.
Great friends, amazing food... that is a taste of Asia!
