Anytime the words "ski" and "France" are found together in a sentence, it's generally followed by "The Alps" and "awesome". Skiing on the summit of Europe is certainly a bucket-list worthy item and a memorable experience, but such prestige comes with a price, and lots of planning.
Luckily, there are other options throughout France that may not be as fancy but that will be just as enjoyable if your real goal is to have a good time on the slopes. Cue central France - Auvergne, more precisely.
This region, who's home to volcanoes (yes!), blue cheese and welcoming locals is also a preferred ski area among the French. Much less onerous than the Alps, easily reachable from many destinations. The views over the surrounding volcanoes, the sunny weather and a less touristy experience are well worth the trip, and will make for a greatly enjoyable vacation.
Quick insider tip: make sure to try the local specialty during your trip - the truffade. A heart-warming potato-cheese mix that will leave few unsatisfied.
