"On December 12, 1999, I sit with the other yogis outside the temple before the rising of the sun. Our designated seats are divided according to the deity associated with our mantra. Mine was Vishnu, Preserver of the Universe. I wear my new white outfit and my mala. The mala, a strand of beads blessed especially for chanting, an Indian 108-bead analogue to the rosary, hangs loosely around my neck. The air all around the students thickens with a heady blend of nervous anticipation, the seriousness of initiation and the particular inner joy cultivated by the ancient practices we’ve been engaging in."
