One of the reasons I love the monsoon or wet season in Siem Reap is because it's the time of year when the rice paddies come alive with activity. Rice farming families and neighbors help each other to plant the rice to get the job done as quickly as possible so they can resume their other jobs. Most Cambodian farmers also hold down other jobs, so nobody can afford to let the planting go on forever. On the day I took this particular picture everyone has their heads down and butts up -- and it's back-breaking work, believe me, I've tried it. But I've also seen people fooling around and joking, knee deep in water. And they always have time for a wave, a smile, and a hello.
