Shwedagon Pagoda

Revered as Burma’s most sacred Buddhist site, the 2,600-year-old Shwedagon Pagoda has a golden stupa you can see from anywhere in the city. Throughout the day crowds of locals and tourists can be found filing along its four covered stairways to the stupa that is believed to contain relics of the Buddha’s hair. Gilded in real gold, the pagoda is topped with a 76-carat diamond and encrusted with precious rubies, sapphires and emeralds.
