A must try experience in Port Vila (or Vanuatu for that matter) is a visit to a nakamal, the local equivalent of a watering hole but where kava, not alcohol, is served. A member of the pepper plant, kava (Piper methysticum) is drunk widely throughout the Pacific. Whereas other countries in the region make it from the dried root and stem, in Vanuatu you'll encounter a more potent mix made from the fresh, green plant. But be warned: a bowl or two of the mildly narcotic drink can leave you stoned. And if you get the munchies, there's a usually a selection of tropical fruit and root vegetables (papaya, plantain, sweet potato) as well as grilled fish and chicken to pick from.
