A tour of a sheep farm in the Picton area provides an opportunity to learn about one of New Zealand's most important exports and the art and science of raising these animals. Sheep are only one of the animal attractions in an area known for its biodiversity. Birders will love Motuara Island Bird Sanctuary, home to blue penguins, rare saddlebacks, bellbirds, robins, native pigeons and yellow-crowned parakeets. Another destination for birders, Kaipupu Point Wildlife Sanctuary is at the tip of Picton Harbor, and has a lovely 2.8-kilometer nature track. The interesting Arapawa Wildlife Sanctuary protects rare and endangered breeds of livestock including unusual goats, sheep and wild pigs.
