The first time I had the pleasure of finding this treasured fruit was in a visit to beautiful island of Cebu in the Philippines. I went to have breakfast at one of the best buffets in the city... the best way to start the discovery of unusual foods that you might otherwise not see.
During my first lap around the culinary maze in the restaurant I set my eyes on a deep-purple-rough-looking fruit that I had never seen before. My curious palate was being called... and I listened. One of the waiters saw my inquisitive look and offered to bring a few of the mysterious fruit to my table, "These are Mangosteens" he said.
To my surprise, the rough looking shell hid a soft cotton-like center that tasted like no other fruit I have ever had. The center is made up of beautiful white pieces or segments that are meant to be enjoyed one by one... slowly, taking in the flavors that burst in the mouth with each piece. There is a tart beginning that gets your salivary glands working almost instantly, and that slowly turns sweeter until the end of each bite; it leaves you wanting more, one is not enough. You can taste the antioxidants and almost feel them getting absorbed recharging your body while you eat them.
It is health, life and passion ... it's a Mangosteen.
