There has been a candy store occupying this building in Old City continuously since 1863, although there have been four different owners over time. So many locals, including me, were crushed when the Shane Family closed the store in 2010, after 99 years in operation. The Berley Brothers, who own and operate the Franklin Fountain ice cream parlor a few doors away on Market Street, were determined to preserve the heritage and history of Shane Candies. In 2011, they took over, keeping the store name, and dedicated themselves to learning the craft of confectionery. Even for those who don't like candy (is that even possible?), visiting the store is worthwhile just to see the gorgeous Victorian interior. When you walk in the door, it's like stepping back in time, and you'll feel like a kid again, peeking into the vintage glass-topped cabinets full of chocolates and other sweets. Look for the Whirly Berley Bars (chocolate nougat with salted chocolate caramel), and be sure to check out the seasonal creations, like the pumpkin spice buttercreams.
