North Korea is one of the world’s most secretive countries. But one of their secrets is out—they make great soju, the wildly popular Korean rice whiskey.
One northern brand that has made it past the DMZ is Ohbal soju, the pretty green bottle decorated with a graceful, traditionally dressed woman. But like almost everything else in North Korea, not much is known about the brand or the story of the pretty woman on the bottle, other than it makes for an unusual souvenir.
You’ll find it readily available at the tourist shops along the DMZ farther north, and while the brand is difficult to find in the Seoul, it’s not impossible. A shared love of soju is something the two Koreas have in common; so raise your glasses to reunification.
