K-Pop may be conquering Asia and beyond when it comes to modern-day music, but Korea’s traditional music, or gugak, is an art form every visitor to Korea must experience for its unique sound, rhythms, and theatricality. The National Gugak Center, located in Seocho-dong, Seocho-gu, promotes and develops various forms of gugak, most simply divided into court music and folk music. The Center is the home of a comprehensive, recently renovated gugak museum, and also offers classes and instruction in a number of traditional instruments and dance forms. Four arts organizations perform here: the Court Music Orchestra, Dance Theatre, Folk Music Group, and the Contemporary Gugak Orchestra. Concerts are held for the public every Saturday afternoon for the affordable rate of 10,000 won (about US $10).
