Located in the heart of the famous Dongdaemun shopping district, the Dongdaemun Design Plaza, which officially opened on March 21, 2014, is Seoul’s brand new hub for design, art, and fashion. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid, the eye-poppingly futuristic, freeform complex spans 918,000 square feet, with a curvilinear exterior comprised of 45,133 aluminum panels of varying sizes that are gorgeously illuminated at night. DDP’s three interconnecting buildings weave seamlessly around an outdoor park, and house multiple museums, a design “lab” with design-oriented shops, and a convention center with dramatic event spaces—the main art hall is now the home of Korea’s biannual Fashion Week. In keeping with Dongdaemun Market’s famous 24-hour shopping, DDP also offers a round-the-clock market complete with boutiques and a food court.
