Seals
Cruising along Magdalenafjord, you may easily spot bearded seals sunbathing on ice floes, swimming in the fjord or resting on the shore. Bearded seals are generally calm and easy to approach in areas where they are not hunted, including Svalbard, where they are numerous. They are the largest of the northern seals and have an elaborate set of long whiskers that extend from their face and curl when they are dry. The average weight of a bearded seal is about 275 kilograms (600 pounds); females tend to be larger than males, while pups weigh about 35 kilograms (75 pounds) at birth.
