Nothing beats dining on fresh fish caught right outside your home. All you need is rod, reel, rigging and of course your fishing license.
A 5 minute walk south on the bluff trail in front of Sea Ranch Abalone Bay vacation rental brings you to the other side of the protected Marine Preserve (located just before Smugglers Cove). A low or minus tide makes it perfect for shore casting. It may take a bit of caution to walk out across the slippery rocks to waters edge, but the effort is well worth it. Within one hour we hooked 6 sizable fish, including a tasty lingcod.
We rigged our lines using a "grub" or "curly tail" which allows the tail to swing back and forth and quickly attract the fish. The most effective was the 4" long black and yellow with a 1/2 oz red head hook. I recommend 40# braid line as it is stronger, thinner and allows the cast to fly nearly twice as far.
It is also a fabulous location for harvesting mussels. But before you harvest any mussels, do be very mindful to check California's Fish and Game to determine if there are any restrictions posted.
For the non-sportsman, woman and child who may not be interested in fishing, the tide pools hold many fun discoveries. And you may just be lucky enough to see a whale pass by! In fact during our last outing we saw two swim within 100 yards from us. Of course we all claimed them as the ones that got away!
