The Schlossberg, which literally means Castle Mountain, is in many ways the heart of Graz. It is after all where the city’s unconquerable fortress once stood and where young and old still go to escape the busy streets today. Schlossberg makes for an exciting visit from start to finish. You can decide to either walk up the mountain, which can be a small workout, take the funicular, or the glass elevator that was built right into the center of Schlossberg. Once you are at the top, there is the Uhrturm, Graz’ iconic landmark, and stunning views of the region waiting for you. Several historic structures are hidden away by the romantic paths that wind around the mountain, best discovered on a leisurely afternoon stroll. You may also enjoy a sunset from up here, while sipping a glass of local Sauvignon Blanc in one of the chic restaurants overlooking the city.
