Sao Roque Canal

Aveiro, Portugal

When I visit Aveiro, I love to wander around the city. I especially love the canals and their alleys.I get to see the different moliceiros (boats), the fish market, the fishermen, tourists, and the many restaurants. There are several very good restaurants on the back canals and they specialize in the regional cuisine: fresh fish, shellfish, eels, meat kabobs, and suckling pig (really delicious and served with orange slices). The regional wines (Bairrada) are very good. The bread is hearty and I can never resist it. Don’t forget their famous sweet Ovos Moles. Finish up your meal with an expresso and a little Port. The canal in this picture - Canal Sao Roque - features the brightly colored homes that were formerly those of the marnotos (salt pan workers). This was the view from the restaurant. I took the picture from my table. Do sample a canal restaurant in Aveiro. Great fun and a great dining experience. For more info check out:www.visitcentro.com
