Santa Teresa

If any part of Rio comes as an utter surprise to first-time visitors, it’s the colonial Santa Teresa district. Winding streets lead up the hills to where the elite used to escape the humidity below. Small shops, cafés and the fine Museu da Chácara do Céu are within walking distance of the main square. When you're ready to head back downtown, board the neighborhood's star attraction: the Bondinho, the yellow tram line that crosses a soaring aqueduct to make the trip.
