Sunset on Sam Knob, Pisgah National Forest
This is the best camping spot I've found so far. A little more than a mile into the hike from the parking lot, the tree and shrub lined trail opens up into a grassy bald with amazing mountain views all around. We stopped here for the night because the sun was setting and the grass was so incredibly plush it was irresistible. I've heard there's a ton more to see on those trails, so we'll have to make it back up there soon. Fair warning, even in the middle of summer it's cold up there. Bring a jacket! Parking and access to the trail are at the end of the Black Balsam Knob Rd. off the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 420.

Sunrise on Sam Knob, Pisgah National Forest
This is the best camping spot I've found so far. A little more than a mile into the hike from the parking lot, the tree and shrub lined trail opens up into a grassy bald with amazing mountain views all around. We spent the night on the soft grass there and woke up to a cacophony of birds, I swear it was every bird in the forest, chirping at sunrise. The clouds cleared just long enough for us to snap a few shots and pack up for our hike out. Parking and access to the trail are at the end of the Black Balsam Knob Rd. off the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 420.
