The Salt House

For generations, salt was the island’s biggest industry. The Grand Turk Lighthouse was constructed in 1852 primarily to protect the salt business—too many ships were crashing on the shallow reef trying to retrieve the precious cargo. This museum traces the history of salt's inextricable link to the development of Grand Turk. There is a replica of a windmill and exhibits on Bermuda sloops, the boats traditionally used to transport salt.
