Saitobaru Burial Grounds

Designated a National Historical Site in 1952, the Saitobaru Burial Grounds area features more than 300 kofun, or burial mounds, which were constructed between the 4th and 7th centuries. Visitors can meander through trails among the mounds, which were built to cover tombs of important people. The largest, the Osahozuka and Mesahozuka mounds, are thought to contain the tombs of Ninigi No Mikoto, a deity and ancestor of the current imperial family. Some of the items excavated from the burial mounds are on display at the Prefectural Saitobaru Archaeological Museum.
