I spent some time in Kyiv (Kiev), the lovely capital of Ukraine. This is the St. Michael's Monastery, named for and dedicated to the Archangel Michael. It was built between 1108 and 1113.
Around 1934, Soviet authorities declared the monastery as having no historical value, and demolished most of it during the next couple of years.
In 1963, preservation efforts commenced, and today a beautifully restored church stands proudly in the square.
