Sabirtarşi street stand, on Istiklal Avenue, not far from Taksim, is known for İçli Köfte, elongated crunchy bulgur shells stuffed with minced meat, ground walnuts, onions and spices. They are very good indeed, doubly special because they are quite difficult to make. Sabirtarşi's İçli Köfte are not only delicious, they are nicely spiced, perfectly formed, and not too greasy: in a word, irresistible.
If you have time for a leisurely meal, climb five flights of stairs to Sabirtarşi Restaurant-Cafe and try for a table by the window. The view over Istiklal is great, and when I was there, genial owner Mustafa Topçuoğlu invited me to see the famous Köfte makers in action.
After you've satisfied the street-food urge, go for one of Sabirtarşi's home-style main courses, such as the Karseri-style manti . This family-owned restaurant offers excellent food, good value and friendly service!
