Statford-Upon-Avon is a fairyland where beautiful bronze statues of Shakespeare's Falstaff, Prince Hal, Lady Macbeth, Fool and so on inhabit parks and city streets. White, cream, orange and dark siena stones form lovely arched bridges and buildings that transport you into the past. Swans glide with the Avon's ripples and gather at river's edge seeking your handout. The Royal Shakespeare Theatre perches over its banks and invites you to a magical production of "King Lear," "The Tempest" or "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Or you can simply walk over to the park and view actors playing a love scene between Romeo and Juliet. And, by all means, do not fail to visit one of its many used book stores to pick out an old copy of a Shakespearean tragedy or romance to take home as the perfect souvenir.
