Royal Barges National Museum

Before Bangkok became the modern metropolis it is today, the Chao Phraya River was its main avenue of transportation, and boats for commoners and royals alike plied the waters. Today, the royal barges are rarely used except for major ceremonial events, such as the king’s milestone birthdays. A handful of the vessels are on display here. Each one is long and slender, carved from a single, massive piece of teak and dripping with gold, gems and colorful glass.
