Though La Piscine is not as famous or grand as Lille’s Palais des Beaux Arts, it’s my preferred of the two, by a long shot. Located about 20 minutes from Lille by metro, this unusual museum features art that is diverse in period, style, and medium throughout its seemingly endless hallways and niches. In the past, the building housed Roubaix’s bathing pool - or piscine - and the namesake is still there! In the main room, statues line the long pool and absolutely gorgeous stained glass windows give the echoing room an almost ethereal feel. The changing rooms and showers on either side have been carefully and creatively converted into exhibition rooms; they’re fun to explore, as you never know what you’ll encounter in the next tiled room!
