Rottnest Island is only a short 30 minute ferry ride from Fremantle. It's regarded as one of Western Australia's best kept secrets, and I agree. It is home to some of the most beautiful and relaxing beaches.
Trip to the island can be filled with activities or it can consists of sunbathing, cooling off in a shallow bay and indulging in ice cream. One of the best ways to explore the island is on two wheels. Hire a bike and cycle around the island with many pit stops on the way.
Looking out to the water you are mesmerized by the beautiful blue tones and if the surface is so gorgeous, you can only imagine the fish that live in these waters. You don't need any fancy gear or have to travel a distance to swim with them. All you need is snorkeling gear and just a short distance from the shores you'll be in the company of many different fish and coral species.
Accommodations on the island range from premium units to rugged camp sites. Regardless of your budget though, you will always be just a short distance from the island's stunning views. Bungalows and chalets are a good choice for groups as they are fairly economical and are equipped with the basics: furnishings, fully functional kitchen and a gas BBQ.
If you are keen to discover an island and experience a pristine landscape, the trip, even if just for the day, is an absolute must for those visiting Western Australia.
