Just down the street from the Museum of Modern Art, Rockefeller Center and this section of Fifth Avenue provide opportunities for a typically New York way of dealing with the stress of city living: retail therapy. Rockefeller Center consists of 19 different buildings over three square blocks. Home to Radio City Music Hall and the Center’s must photographed ice-skating rink (as well as Christmas tree during the holidays), the complex was built in the 1930s and is an impressive Art Deco “campus,” though one that is filled with cafés and stores rather than class rooms. Two other New York landmarks sit on the opposite side of Fifth Avenue and face Rockefeller Center—St. Patrick’s Cathedral (which has emerged from behind its screen of scaffolding after having been restored and meticulously cleaned) and the flagship Saks Fifth Avenue.
