While sailing down this beautiful fjord, put yourself in the fur boots of famous Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen, the first person to reach both poles. In 1926, long before computer-aided navigation, Amundsen and 15 other men made the first successful crossing of the Arctic from Svalbard to Alaska on the Norge, a dirigible. Two years later, Amundsen was lost with his crew while their plane was en route to aid in rescue operations for the airship Italia. Very little of the plane's wreckage has ever been recovered. A monument to his heroic achievements stands in Ny-Ålesund on Svalbard.
