The area around Taos, New Mexico is quite volcanic, with extinct volcanos rising blue in the distance. The basalt plain west of town is cut deeply by the Rio Grande and can be viewed for dramatic effect in the afternoons when the shadows delineate the edges and emphasize its depth.
From the village of Pilar, you can tour the river on a white water raft, or drive to the many river access points and put in your own kayak. North of Taos, the Gorge Bridge provides a route to the opposite side. A walk across the bridge is worth a stop there, it's a long ways down!!
