Rio Bueno

Not well known among visitors to Jamaica, the historic seaside village of Rio Bueno to the east of Falmouth was visited by Columbus on his second voyage. With its deep horseshoe-shaped harbor, the town prospered in early colonial times before hitting harder times. Today, old Georgian houses, the ruins of an old fort and former bauxite-shipping wharfs merit a visit, as do its fine if small Anglican and Baptist churches. For a sense of the local art scene, visit the Gallery Joe James next door to the Hotel Rio Bueno; both are owned by Joe James.
