Eating at El Rastro: Tostas from El Capricho Extremeño
El Rastro is overwhelming. As one of the largest outdoor flea markets in Europe, you're going to need a break at some point. Enter El Capricho Extremeño, a Sunday afternoon institution in Madrid. The line will be long, but it's part of the experience. Once you reach the front, order however you can...in Spanish or by pointing to the toast that strikes your fancy. Be sure to grab a cup of tinto de verano or soda to go as well.
Pictured are two toasts topped with gulas (imitation baby eels) with a few shrimp and hot peppers, and pulpo, or octopus, topped with paprika and olive oil. There's no place to sit inside, and the area around the doorway isn't the most appetizing of locales, so head down the street a little bit to the little playground plaza before you dig in.
