The local cantinas in the Yucatán are renowned for filling customer tables with free snacks -or botanas- for each beverage ordered. With each successive round of drinks the snacks get better and by the time you leave, you’ve eaten a great meal.
Of all the cantinas, Eladio’s is one of the most generous of this kind of establishment. have one beer and local snacks such as panuchos, papadzules, tacos, tamales will be at your table before you ask for them. They do have a food menu, but why bother when its free.
In some seasons, especially at their beach location in Progreso, Eladio’s also serves seafood: shrimp specialities, fried fish, grilled octopus and oysters. There is one branch at downtown Mérida (a little east of the main plaza) which is the most popular for the visitors, but the most crowded is the one on the beach in Progreso.
Beyond Eladio’s, there are plenty more “botaneros” in Mérida to explore. While the food may vary a bit, all have great prices and a warm welcome.
