Explore India's History
Art enthusiast Dr. Dinkar Kelkar started collecting objects in the 1920s, and by 1960, he’d amassed over 15,000 pieces. In 1962, Dr. Kelkar made a gift of the collection to Maharashtra’s Archeology Department, which now boasts over 20,000 curiosities. The collection primarily features Indian decorative artifacts from the 18th and 19th centuries. Set aside some time for your visit: You can spend hours examining the beautiful paintings, chess sets, earthenware, musical instruments, deities, weapons, and textiles that fill this museum.
