The Midwest's Indie Bookshop
Rainy Day Books has been around since 1975, and in its four decades of existence, it's become known as the Midwest stop for authors on book tours. Jonathan Franzen has read here, and other visitors have included Chelsea Clinton and Isabel Allende. Travelers have a good chance of catching an event here; the store hosts more than 300 a year. Visitors who show up on a rare day when there's nothing scheduled can still choose from among the thousands of classics, bestsellers, and new releases in Rainy Day's inventory.
