Summer and Scott Catino, owners of Quail Run Creamery, are truly passionate about cheese making, their really cute goats, and most of all running a sustainable business.
Located in the beautiful coast range, the farm is populated by Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats. The goats are allowed to forage in the meadows (weather permitting) and given locally sourced feed. They produce a much higher quality milk for cheese making. I had the opportunity to try my hand at it, and with some expert instruction from Scott and Summer, I was successful.
But the best was yet to come: We got to sample our cheese on crostini with local herbs and tomatoes. It was so fresh and fantastic. When we visited, an outdoor pizza oven was in the plans, and now the oven is up and running for making truly homemade rustic pizza. This is a true outdoor Oregon experience. Everything locally sourced, the dairy goats being carefully tended, and we also had some wonderful Oregon pinot noir to enjoy along with the "fruits" of our labor.
Quail Run offers tours and tasting by appointment only. Visit their website for details.
