The Dominican Republic is renowned for several wonderful products. Their rum is smooth and excellent - the older, the better. The cigars rival the Cuban tobacco ( some claim they are superior to the Cuban choices). Dominican coffee and coffee beans are superb ( I felt it was better than Kona and Jamaican) and rich. The vanilla and vanilla beans have strong flavors and enhance many dishes.
But of their main products my favorite is their cacao - the dark, rich, fresh powder that is made into drinks and deserts. Chocolate is offered at every hotel, restaurant, and grocery store. The drink is pinkish probably because the Dominicans add cinnamon to their chocolate drink. It is delicious either hot or cold.
I waited in a long line at the duty free shops at the airport (& almost missed my plane - it was worth it) for my packages of cacao powder. I am now enjoying my cacao in my homemade xylitol brownies and my morning protein drinks which are rich and dark - but no cinnamon for me .
When you go to the Dominican Republic do try the products that come from this wonderful side of the island. I wonder if Columbus got to try the tobacco, rum, coffee, and cacao of the Dominican Republic? I'll have to look into the history & dates of these products…..
The tropical foods and drinks and native products of the area shouldn't be missed when you are there. They made my trip special. Take some of the products home with you and savor them as you remember you tropical vacation.

This is a must do dinner and show aboard a "Pirate Ship"
We booked this through Guest Services at Barcelo Bavaro Beach Resort .
We were picked up and returned from this wonderful tour where we were entertained
by a bunch of pirates and fed a lobster meal by them. Worth every $
