Each year in February, the entire city gathers at the Dzong to watch the Punakha Festival. Locals & monks practice for months to perform dances at the festival that enact cultural fables. The goal is to remind people of their traditions, do good deeds & earn good karma. The Buddhist monks also dress up in long gowns & reenact their war against Tibet.
It is believed that attending the festival is a must at least once in a lifetime, to wash away sins & receive blessings.
