Puketi Forest
Home to New Zealand’s towering native kauri trees—one of the world’s largest and longest-living trees—this 15,000-hectare (37,000-acre) forest is a popular locale for walks and hikes. The Puketi Nature Trail is an easy one-hour loop through kauri forests, while the 45-minute Walnut Track runs along a steep ridge and is only for advanced hikers. Guided tours are available, with information provided not only on the kauri, but also on some of the forest’s other 370 plant species.
