I took this photo on another amazing afternoon on the east coast of Sri Lanka during a two month stay. The surf was big and perfect, providing long peeling right hand waves. This family climbed up on the rocks to watch the surf and the light was so perfect that I had to get a photo. They were so excited to be photographed and we spent a good 10 minutes trying to figure out how I could get the photo to them. They didn't have a compute or email, and there were no places to print photos nearby. So I just showed them the photo on my tiny camera screen and that seemed to suffice.
Sri Lanka holds a soft place in my heart. This was a magical place, with elephants trumpeting in the bush, and stretches of immaculate white sand beaches. When I want to remember the details such as the smell of curry, the heat of the beating sun or the warm smiles, I look at this photo.
