Mother Earth on The Surface - El Tio Underground
Potosi, the once silver rich land largely exploited by the Spanish colonial system, is still a land full of treasures. The Aymara culture is still alive and vibrant and for those who still mine, Pachamama or Mother Earth is still revered on the surface. Visitors can see copious libations to Pachamama at the entrance to mines, while underground El Tio - which translates to The Uncle - is revered. Offerings to El Tio take on a darker aspect but at the end of the day, whatever your take on this way of life and culture, given the harsh conditions in mining, you can't but admire the local's tenacity and adaptation of indigenous and Christian beliefs to provide protection.
