Clear Blue Bliss
The 20,000 acres of Possum Kingdom Lake make up the heart of Possum Kingdom State Park, located in the semi-arid canyon country formed by the Palo Pinto Mountains and the Brazos River Valley. Built as a reservoir in the late 1930’s by the Works Progress Administration and the Brazos River Authority, the lake has some of the clearest and deepest water in the state; the limestone cliffs at Hell’s Gate cove are particularly striking. Get up close to the clear blue bliss with swimming, kayaking, boating, water skiing, and fishing, or join the snorkelers and scuba divers who are drawn by the clarity of the water and its coves. Summers are hot here, but the lake is refreshing as its breezes—and the cabins are air-conditioned.
