Not long ago, the neighborhood where Port Morris Distillery is located was isolated and industrial, and definitely not a destination of any sort. But since PMD and Bronx Brewery opened within the past couple of years, the neighborhood has been undergoing something of a quiet renaissance, attracting adventurous folks from all over.
PMD is the only place in New York—indeed, the only place in the mainland U.S.—where pitorro, a Puerto Rican spirit, is made. You can drop in to tour the distillery; afterward, stick around and order a drink or two at the bar, which is bumping on weekends. Careful, though; pitorro’s powerful stuff and the punch of the 80- to 92-proof liquor can sneak up on you quickly.
