Who knew that Edgar Allan Poe spent time in the army base on Sullivan's Island outside of Charleston? The folks behind Poe's Tavern have capitalized on this fact, creating one of the island's most beloved local haunts. Located a few blocks from the beach, the tavern is an old house, meaning the porch is the best place to sit. There's immediate bar access and view of Middle Street people watching. The burgers and fish tacos are legendary, all named for Poe's works, as is the beer selection. You'll find all sorts of Poe memorabilia covering the walls. Keep in mind that it's seat yourself, so you might have to hover for a table.
