Plant Memorial at Xiling Gorge
Many travelers book popular Three Gorges Yangtze River Cruises to take in large swaths of China. If traveling from Chongqing to Yichang, one can view a range of sites from stretches of modernized cities to the awe-inspiring exquisite natural beauty of the Yangtze's Gorges culminating in the man-made marvel, Three Gorges Dam, the largest in the world. When entering Xiling Gorge, a rare monument erected in 1923 honors a foreigner, British river explorer, Captain Samuel Cornell Plant. The Plant Memorial, inscribed in both English and Chinese, celebrates Plant's dedication to modern shipping on the Three Gorges. Captain Plant designed its early steamships, wrote the piloting manual, trained and issued licenses to Chinese and foreign pilots, and installed its safety and navigational markers. The monument was moved to higher ground in 2002 ahead of Three Gorges Dam flooding and is considered an important landmark for Three Gorges shipping history by the Chinese. The monument sits up to the left of Xiling Gorge.
