There was a rumor of epic mountain views in Pokhara. My travel partner and I arrived in the town full of excitement and anticipation for the beautiful Annapurna Mountain range. We settled into our hotel, explored the city and peeked around every corner expecting to be awed with rocky peaks. Alas, no mountains were to be found. For a few days, we stocked up on North Face gear at the local shops and sampled a number of restaurants lining the lakeside road. We were really enjoying our time in Pokhara, despite the apparent lack of peaks.
One morning my travel partner and I pulled ourselves out of bed to experience a sunrise on Phewa Lake. We hired a canoe and started rowing across the mirror-like surface of the lake. We rounded a tree lined corner and what we saw from our canoe was breathtaking. The rumors were indeed true! There in front of us, the snow capped peaks of the Annapurnas stood! The smooth waters of Lake Phewa even reflected the majestic mountains creating an identical copy on its surface. As we rowed quietly across the waters, I sat back and watched the most perfect sunrise imaginable.
So, whenever you're in Pokhara don't be disappointed if you don't see the Annapurnas right away. Sometimes they're just hiding under a blanket of clouds, waiting for you to enjoy them properly: in the perfect, golden light of the rising sun.
