I was delighted to come across the Phare Circus the last time I was lucky enough to visit Siem Reap. I've never tired of exploring the atmospheric temple complexes the region is famous for, but it’s always nice to have the option of variety.
The circus was conceived by a small group of refugees in the Anchanh Village in Battambang who took it upon themselves to become custodians of Cambodian culture.
Their efforts helped establish the Phare Ponleu Selpak Association (PPS) who are now one of the major promoters of Khmer culture. The PPS also helps young Cambodians develop new skills and forge careers as artists and performers.
The Phare Circus offers an hour-long performance that mixes traditional and modern music, dance, contortion and acrobatics to reflect today's Cambodia. Humorous, fun and effervescent, the circus is my tip to shake up any Siem Reap experience. The show is on every night 8pm - 9pm, and tickets are $18 for general admission/$35 for Seat A.
