Like most post-socialist states, Serbia is very centralized. Mostly everything has been consolidated in its capital, Belgrade.
There is a smaller city, however, right outside of Belgrade, with a slower pace of life and a younger university population, Novi Sad. Most people know it as the home of the massive EXIT Festival every year.
The fortress in Novi Sad has an infamous clock tower with the long hand as the hours and the short hand as the minutes. It is said this was done so fisherman, who often lost track of time while spending the day out on the river, could more easily tell what time it was. The hour hand was easier to see from a distance.
A nice reminder that sometimes when we flip something on its head, we actually find a great solution.
