Penneshaw Maritime and Folk Museum
Opened in 1869, the Hog Bay School now houses this adorable pip-squeak of a museum, which has just three rooms. One explores old-time education in this remote rural community; the second details sealing and whaling; the third captures island life. Outside lie the lifeboat ss Karatta and a clay-grinding mill for the china industry. Of especial interest: schoolroom displays about Mary Seymour (née Thomas), said to be the first South Australian child born to a European father and Aboriginal mother.
